Questions people ask about this

Which number on a medical bill can I actually reimburse?

Your patient responsibility — the amount left after insurance — not the billed charge and not the allowed amount. On an EOB that is the line labelled "you may be billed" or "patient responsibility". Submitting the billed charge is one of the most common reasons a claim gets kicked back.

Can I reimburse a bill I have not paid yet?

For a health FSA, the expense has to have been incurred — meaning the care was provided — during the plan year. Whether you have paid the provider yet is a separate question from whether the service happened. A bill for care received in November is reimbursable even if you are still paying it off, but prepaying in December for care scheduled in February is not.

What is a letter of medical necessity?

A short note from a licensed provider stating the diagnosed condition, the item or service being recommended, and the duration of treatment. It converts a dual-purpose expense — supplements, a gym membership, a weight-loss program — into a reimbursable medical expense. Get it before you submit the claim, not after it is denied.

Are insurance premiums FSA-eligible?

No. Health insurance premiums cannot be reimbursed from a health FSA, even though they are unmistakably a medical cost. This surprises people every December.

What is the difference between FSA and HSA eligibility?

The list of qualifying medical expenses is essentially the same for both — IRS Publication 502 governs. The differences are in the account rules, not the expense list: an HSA has no annual spending deadline and the money is yours permanently, while a health FSA has a plan-year deadline and limited or no carryover.
